PS3 update? not for a while!

Postby Nigma » Mon Mar 01, 2010 10:19 am

Dont hookup your PS3 to the internet or update it for a while.
apparently sony released something that kills old "fat" PS3`s

PS3 users the world over are reporting their consoles have been struck down by a mysterious series of bugs, leaving them unable to play games, connect to the PlayStation Network, or access save data.

However, the bug so far seemingly affects only older “fat” units.

A series of severe issues have so far been documented, summarised below:

The bug only affects the pre-Slim models.

The system’s date is reset to 2000/1/1.

The system can no longer connect to the Internet/PSN.

Local trophy data is lost.

Save data is lost.

Many games will no longer run offline or on.

At its most severe the machine will only return “error 8001050F.”

It is not clear whether the data loss is reversible at this stage.

The exact trigger is also unclear – machines have been affected globally, apparently even entirely offline units. Speculation has so far centred on PSN updates or a calendar bug.

Sony has yet to issue any useful comment, though it says it is investigating.

The timing and nature of the bug has naturally also reminded some of the mythical “Sony timer” – how convenient it is that older models largely out of warranty are being broken whilst the PS3 Slim is unaffected and readily available as a replacement, their reasoning runs.

Others have acerbically commented that this is after all what they would expect from a free service.

In any case, it seems Sony has finally caught up with Microsoft in the main area the Xbox 360 still maintained a lead – crippling system defects.

I believe the report, even just to be on the saveside.
Simply because i dont want to lose my savegames, and some savegames *cough*AC2*cough* cant be backed up to USB drive

Bipsie was playing Heavy Rain on it just yesterday and it seemed to be working fine (mine is an old "fat" PS3). I'll ask if she updated it when she wakes up.

Crap, well here I am at work sitting here wondering if I'm going to return home to a bricked PS3. I'm sure they'll fix it soon...I mean they've got to right?....hold me.

There are a lot of people at my work who are in the same boat. "I left my PS3 on paused in a movie!" and "I left it on while playing uncharted 2 on pause!"

I am sure there is a way to fix it and it will be fixed. It is just a question of how long will it take.

Seems like the threat is over

PS3 owners and Sony alike will be heaving a sigh of relief with the news that the PS3’s battle with the complexities of leap year dating has been resolved with no action required on the part of Sony.

Sony’s statement on the matter:

We are aware that the internal clock functionality in the PS3 units other than the slim model, recognized the year 2010 as a leap year.

Having the internal clock date change from February 29 to March 1 (both GMT), we have verified that the symptoms are now resolved and that users are able to use their PS3 normally.

If the time displayed on the XMB is still incorrect, users are able to adjust time settings manually or via the internet. If we have new information, we will update you through the PlayStation.Blog or PlayStation.com.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Their “It only does everything” slogan has never seemed so appropriate, or so unwelcome.

A happy resolution for all, save perhaps crowing Xbox 360 fans who find their favoured console’s reliability record will not likewise be fixed by total inaction on the part of the manufacturer.

Reminds me of the Zune problem. I wonder if the same bug will pop up in 4 years...
